Ruger made a Number 1 single shot rifle in .357 Maximum. A pussy cat to shoot, the rifle barrel turns the Maximum into a little screamer. Remington experimental .357 Maximum and the Number 1. Photos taken by Bill Ruger, Jr., at the Ruger farm in New Hampshire, 1981 or '82. One one factory No. 1 was made in .357 Maximum. This is it. In 1981, a lone Hawkeye single shot pistol was rebuilt with transfer bar lockwork. A 10-1/2" bull barrel fitted, chambered in .357 Maximum. David with the Hawkeye Maximum and a steel ram, 10-shots @ 200 meters. Remington experimental ammo. -Lee www.singleactions.com"Building carpal tunnel one round at a time"

Joe S.... the No. 1 and Hawkeye .357 Maximums were built at the direction of Bill Ruger, Jr. Besides testing against SRM revolvers, Bill was in mind of putting the Hawkeye into production. Whether he thought the same for the Number 1, he didn't say. A sleeper, for sure.
And no, the guns aren't mine. David Bradshaw

Great pics Mr Bradshaw. I notice the rounds tucked between fingers of the forward hand in that kneeling shot. Looks like the Remington experimental ammo was a success!

Very cool! I've long wanted to find a CHP commemorative .357 No. 1 and have it re-chambered to .357 Maximum. Do you recall the rifling twist? Would it stabilize 200r rifle bullets?

snappy.... forgot about those shells. Look closely; one is an empty.
oregon45.... thinking 1:16 twist. Yes, 200 grain rifle bullets, Spire Point as well as Round Nose, fly straight.
whitworth.... reckon that's him. Beaucoup thanks, boys, David Bradshaw
