Vaquero----Spanish for cowboy, derived from the Latin word for cow. Introduction of the Vaquero returned the Blackhawk to its roots in the Colt Single Action Army. The Vaquero continues the essential Peacemaker aesthetic, albeit upscaled to house the .44 Magnum and modernized .45 Colt.
Cowboy Action matches signaled a revival of of sixgun romance. Romance requires something to be attracted to, and, what is more attractive than an Peacemaker? While Bill Ruger wasn't about to forsake New Model lockwork, nor would he deviate from the circular proportions of the Colt.
While less attractive as the flat face of an "old model" hammer, the stepped face of the New Model hammer looks better than all the attempts to circumvent Ruger's transfer bar patent. The New Model lockwork is a passive safety system, meaning the revolver is loaded and unloaded without touching hammer or trigger.
Anthropologists may argue over which came first, the peacemaker front sight, or the ten gallon hat. The Vaquero sight is silver soldered to a small slot in the barrel. An integral part of the peacemaker aesthetic.
Peacemaker rear sight forms a trough in the topstrap. Nothing to grab the thumb on fast draw. Lacks refined graphic of square blade & notch sights, and easy POI shift of an adjustable sight. Polished stainless mimics aesthetic of nickel plating, a protective and popular handgun finish in the late 1800's.
Topstrap trough rear and 10-gallon front sight are intrinsic to the Peacemaker form. Fine shooting is done with this arrangement. It should not be mutilated through installation of an adjustable sight.
Short forcing cone.
Vaquero's beveled crown.
Forward balance in conjunction with short Peacemaker grip incline the trigger finger to become a load-bearing finger. Grip frame rests on middle digit, as distal digit pivots into trigger. Grip conformation and the personal anatomy determine whether this method works for you.
While ON TARGET, though not shooting, nail of trigger finger presses against front of trigger guard.
HEEL INDEX grip (heel of palm to butt of gun), with thumb down on middle finger, helps control first phase of recoil, which starts as bullet accelerates in gun. Effect is to freeze Point of Aim from hammer fall to bullet exit.
