So, I think this one is about perfect. It's much like Steve's .480. It's a 5 shot .45 Colt. Hard to tell which I like best, the 5 shot .45 or the 5 shot .480 both on a medium frame??? That's why I listen to Axehandle and got both...

I've been planning to add S&W barrel to my 44 Spl. Bisley flattop. I have the barrel, but can't decide whether to leave it as a 44 or go with a 5-shot 480 like Steve did.

That's a tough call, 44 spec. would cost less money. I love my little 480, and so does everyone else that has shot it. It's not anywhere near as brutal as you'd think. In most cases a standard Blackhawk (adjustable sight) still need the nose of the frame welded up to make the S&W barrel fit perfect. Here is a pic I took of Robb's (kings6) work in progress gun at Jack Huntington's. The nose has been welded and squared, the barrel still needs to be fit and the nose contoured ...(note the pretty walnut it sits on!)

OK...
Still may be the only way to get some without selling a kidney.
He does a great job on the grips, uses fantastic wood and If I recall, they sorta' come included in the price of the gun.
Sorry for the hijack.

I like the 44 Special so much I guess I need to track down another flattop to use for the 480. "Get both" is the motto here, isn't it?

I have a .480 built on a SS mid-frame flat top. It has the same modified grip frame Steve has but my barrel is 4 5/8" octagon.
I would without even thinking bout it get the .480.
I swear it doesn't snap any worse than a hot 250gn .44sp load with 385s at about 1050 out of it.
It's that "more of a push" thing. Bigger hole.
You're NOT to run those mid-frame .480s with full tilt loads anyhow!
It will cost considerably more though.

Bushog, that gun will be a 5 shot 45 Colt with a rebored Smith & Wesson 629 barrel and hopefully a fluted cylinder with Jack doing the grips and his bisley grip modification. I sent him the gun, barrel, long ER assembly, Bowen sight and #5 basepin and he was tickled to death to not have to hunt up parts. Once the gun arrives here in Oregon, it will head to Roy Fishpaw or Rob Rowen for Dall sheep grips as well.

I've ran mine with factory Hornady stuff and Beartooth 420's over H-110 just to see what mine could do.( Jack said it was fine) If published data is used, the gun will handle it just fine.
Bushog is right, it's more of a heavy push kind of recoil. And the modified/reshaped gripframe/grips fitted to YOUR hand has everything to do with it.
........and mine sees low- mid range loads over a 375gr bullet 90% of the time.

Fancy walnut and sheep horn grips........almost like a beautiful woman trying to deicide on which dress to wear.

I have wanted another gun with Dall sheep grips ever since my son selected my first custom as his welcome home gift from one of his deployments to the sand box. I offered him three different custom guns and that was the one he chose so I have an excuse to replace it. Ironically, two weeks ago he moved to England for his next duty station for 3-4 years so guess where that first gun along with all his other guns are living while he is gone? (So types the old man with a smile on his face!)

Where did you find a stainless long er housing?
That long ER housing thing is the ticket!

I think I rattled all the smiths cages until one of them coughed it up. To be honest, I can not even remember which one it was but for some reason John G. comes to mind.
