I HATE the front ramp sights on my Blackhawks. It is my ONE gripe about a GREAT sixgun. I have said for years Ruger should use a Single Six style sight. Or at least one with replaceable blades to give people options without costly gunsmithing work. Or even a Redhawk front base like Mr. Bradshaw has on his Bisley. But nope. They give us a ramp. And usually one thats too short. Here lately they have gotten better about tall front ramps in big bores. But they are still ramps. They glare bad for me. Some people dont mind em but they effect my shooting. Well yesterday i shot some at the farm around noon and fought that front sight glare the whole time. So last night i decided to file the sight, thinking worst case, I'd be out $100 having a custom sight fitted to the gun. Wel i did, and tried it out today. OH MAN!! WHAT A DIFFERENCE!! Ruger should make em this way. Ok maybe make em a little more attractive. But flat for sure.

I've spoken with the folks at Ruger about offering the same front sight as they do on the stainless guns. The ones with the replaceable blades. That way, we can get different heights, AND custom modify them as we wish.

I like Ruger ramps. That thing with the tit sticking up is not attractive to my eye.

Pinned in front sight blades or interchangeable front sight blades (like the Freedom Arms / Super Redhawk) would seem to be the answer to suit everyone. It is a manufacturing decision driven by dollars and accountants, I'm sure. Being able to accommodate different heights, shapes, fiber optic inserts, even the "tit sticking up" style front blade seems like the best of all worlds - if we can get Ruger to listen!

Have to 101% agree with the OP...even the standard blade on a Freedom Arms $2000+ gun is horrible. It turns totally gray on me between the two nice black sight leaves.
I think the major reason that most manufacturers put a ramp front sight on is the complaints from shooters who carry handguns in holsters. They gripe about the Patridge type blade tearing up their holsters.
The Ruger GP100 comes standard with an interchangeable front sight system. How much more money per gun would it cost Ruger to put a Weigand style front sight base on their single actions and one ramp blade standard. I just had one installed on a S&W 657 and it is great. It is too bad that Weigand has discontinued the base for Ruger single actions...

While they are at it, maybe Ruger could use a decent rear sight, get rid of thread choke and the small cylinder throats in the big bores, too. Just IMHO.

I carry this one in a holster al the time. It js worth having to replace a holster every now and then in order to be able to shoot comfortably and consistently.
Nolongcolt, while i agree the sight could be more attractive, it isnt so ugly i cant stand it. The function of the sight this way is far superior (for me) over the ramp it used to be. So in this case, I'll take function over form anyday.

Little reminiscent of the one on Elmers last word As for interchangable sights they offer it on the hunters and then don't offer any different blades that fit right. I'd just be happy with the pinned sight like the stainless.

For those who prefer a pinned front blade, its a simple matter to take your gun to your gunsmith and have him mill off the blade, mill a groove in the ramp and dirll for a pin. Blades are easily fabricated to you specifications and installed. And in place of pinning, a screw can be installed for ease of interchange. Best have this done just after hunting season and turn around time is very quick. Not too sure pin is visible on ths Super Blackhawk: Obviously I have no objection to the quick draw style blade. As to rear sights, here is an all steel rear sight from Gary Reeder. Provides a much better sight picture that factory, and less overhang than the Bowen rear sight. Bob Wright

Agreed. Then if they'd replace the silly little .075" blade on their Vaquero's with one .100" thick, all would be well!

Sorry pics on my part, but mine get the .595" sight then filed down to the correct height. Then I simply file the notch right at the point where the ramp begins. Follow it up with some cold blue.

Also note how far the screw hole is off center.... This was the first one that I cut and I referenced level off the topstrap. Being an OM with high polish, the topstrap was no where near level..... I had to notch the original sight hole and keep moving it over until I got it sighted in with the rear centered. Then drilled another in the right place. Had to fill it with JB to try to hide that hideous off center screw..... lesson learned. Index level off the inside of the cylinder window.
