He had hoped to use the Bowen old model 41 I gave him a couple of years ago as a deployment gift. Unfortunately with all his trips overseas and the upcoming move, I have had all his guns down here in Oregon for over a year. With no opportunity to stay sharp with the handgun he carried the 41 as well as carrying the little Remington Model 7 in 7mm-08 I bought the kids years ago when they started hunting. With the cat so far up in the tree and the poor shooting situation, he wisely decided to use the rifle. His first shot had the cat falling towards earth with branches snapping etc. when suddenly it reached out with all four paws, grabbed the tree about 20' up and with a nasty snarl, started climbing down right in front of the guide and me as we were holding the dogs. I hollered to "Hit it again!" and Rem found cat hair in the little scope and smacked it again. It jumped off the tree and headed down into the creek bottom and up the other side 15-20 years when it folded up and gave up the fight. Once he packed it up out of the bottom and onto the road and I got to look at the claws and teeth I understood why the outfitters calls the cougar the true top predator of the mountains. Yes, the wolves make kill more game but they do it in packs while the lion kills the same sized animals only in a one on one situation. In fact, this cat had killed a whitetail deer earlier that morning and had drug it across the snowy road which is how the guide first found the track.

Barely above freezing 2 Dogs. That is why even though it was a 5 day hunt, we really only had the first day for any chance of success due to stuff thawing and losing tracking conditions for the dogs.

Congratulations to your son Robb, he's a fine looking young man, sure takes after his mom! Lion hunting is a real test & even with dogs is far from a sure thing, they will really give you a run for your money. They are so fast, like you mentioned, you shoot one, they move & its almost impossible to even keep your eyes on them, much less your gun, I almost found out the hard way many years ago. Thats just a great looking cat in typical rugged lion country. Took me 13 hours & many miles on snow shoes to get mine, toughest hunting day I ever put in. Dick

Congratulations to Remington and you, Robb! I feel certain this hunt will always be among his most cherished hunting memories. I see that he learned you can hunt lions 2 ways in Idaho: straight up, or straight down. I wish I was young enough to do it again. Since Dick is showing lion pictures, I will too. These were 2 of the toughest hunts I've ever been on, even though I was in great shape in those days. Near Tabiona Utah: 9 hr. chase over 3 1/2 mountains, cat jumped tree 3 times: Canyon Creek Idaho. Lion killed the lead dog on the first day. We stayed on that lion for 4 days, finally treeing and killing him when he returned to the kill: Gosh, I love mountain lion hunting! All the best wishes to Remington, you, and the rest of your family.

Robb great hunt and cool pics, these cats are certainly special. Good luck to your son on his assignment, hopefully there will be very little excitement involved.
My brother has a buddy who is cat crazy, guides for them but they don't shoot to many, they have to be the right cats to take out of the ecosystem for them to shoot them. Anyways he wants to get my brother a big tom this winter, I am going to try a tag along if and when they go. I don't want to kill one myself but being along for the chase and tree oh yea.

Hey Bill, I am trying to take each of the boys on some type of hunt while I can still get around and the next one on the list is my youngest son Spencer who lives in Denver. Do not be surprised if I do not try to pick your brain on units to look at around the Denver area where I might be able to take he and a friend for a short elk hunt in the next couple of years. Not looking for a trophy type area but just one where they should have an opportunity to at least see some elk with hopefully a shootable one some place in the mix. I will probably come out either with my truck and the gear or maybe even look at an outfitter who does not necessarily do pack in drop camps but who would be willing to set up a camp in a drivable locations so we would just need our personal gear etc.

I didn't know you had a son in Denver, if he needs anything I am happy to oblige there as well, my office is just south of the stadium.

Cool stuff right there. Too bad we can't hunt 'em like that in Oregon anymore. Great story and pics & good luck to them in Europe and they stay safe!
