As I have no plans to hunt Africa again for a couple of years, the other critter I have always wanted to take is the American buffalo. If anyone here has hunted them in the last 2-3 years somewhere say from Idaho-Montana to Nebraska and would like to share the name of their outfitter and how it went, would love to hear about it. I don't want to hunt Texas or too far east or south. I live in WA state and while I suppose I could shoot one here, it just seems like it should be a bit further east than home. Oh yeah, I didn't win the Troy Lions club raffle again this year!! Thanks!

I have wondered this as well. I have a burning desire to whack one with one of my handguns

I was lucky enough to have a buddy that was partners in a buffalo farm, that they decided to quit & turn into a hunting preserve... so, 3 years in a row, my wife's cousins family & mine split a buffalo... I can't say it was hunting, as they were in 140-180 acre pastures... having buffalo in the freezer for 3 years in a row, really spoiled us... it's wonderful to eat... I still have 2 dried & salted hides hanging on a couple walls inside the grainery... one is quite large, & prime... I should get it tanned, before the mice get to it too bad... however they are pretty challenging to kill... of course we were trying to head shoot them, as the heart is wonderful, when marinated & put on the grill... ( the locker plant wouldn't take them live, or with the hide on, so we had to shoot them, & skin them before the locker plant would take them ) Mrs. cousin used a 30-06 the year it was his turn to shoot... & while he ended up with 3 shots in about a 3" group, he was firing down into a bowl, & his shots were just low of the brain, & missed the spinal cord... took about 15 minutes just standing there, before it went down, I was able to walk up, & finish that one with a 357 revolver shot... the year I shot, I used a custom Martini single shot, in 45-70, & interestingly one of the hard parts was moving the others away, they all kept butting the downed bull, trying to get him to stand back up... they finally had to drive the others away with a tractor ( which also worked quite well for hanging up the buffalo to gut & skin ) I'm guessing a "real" hunt would be challenging to get close enough for a good shot ( which would likely be best accomplished with a shoulder breaking shot ) & then moving the animal to a truck... I'd love to try actually hunting one... I've since added several more single shots that should be up to the job a couple pics... I wouldn't call it hunting, but it did give me a once in a lifetime chance to shoot a big bull buffalo...

I had been curious too. Seems like a good 50th birthday present to myself if I can sell my wife on it.

I have a hunt scheduled for the end of Feb in South Dakota. Will be happy to post the results after completing the hunt. Not expecting it to be a normal hunt per say. Main reason I am doing it is because the outfitters price is more than fair just for the value of the meat.

Define "normal" hunt? If you think about it the grand old guys of myth and legend hardly "hunted" them by todays standards.

I have always felt that as well. Buffalo were slaughtered by the millions from horse, train, wagon, whatever. Herds just mostly stood around and got mowed down. Or got run over cliffs in droves.

Last I knew there is or was a couple of places near Santa Fe N.M. that offered a hunt and lodging as well.

I first put down a deposit about 2 years ago and was supposed to complete the hunt Jan 2013. But then at the last moment found out I had to have surgery to have three disks in my neck replaced with cadaver bone and he agreed to postpone the hunt with no penalty. Then he also worked out to allow my wife to come with me for a very reasonable fee for room and board.

Thanks for the link, always good to hear about positive dealings with outfitters! Funny thing I was scrolling through the pics on there sight, and one of the pics jumped out at me... The 2007 buffalo bull pic with the guy in blaze orange, that's a family friend of mine. I totally forgot he went buffalo hunting!
