"Hey mom I'm going hiking with the guys in bear country with no gun". Yeah, normally that would be a dumb thing to do. But it seems that the definition of "bear country" is changing rapidly - they're showing up in the darndest places these days. There have been a few in my area - one was on the east side of Cincinnati recently - and if you live around here, you'd have never thought it possible. My place in Kentucky hasn't had any since the family built it in the 1950's - but during the last two years I have been finding bear droppings right out in my yard and driveway.

Where do you go to get youth-enized? My original supply has run out. Seriously, bad way to have to check out. I feel for the family of this poor guy. Personally, I don't go anywhere without some kind of armament...which means I won't be going to NJ anytime soon, I guess. Anyway, what's all this about "youth in Asia"....we should worry more about youth in the U.S.

The way the laws are in NJ you generally come out better getting mauled by a bear than carrying a firearm and getting mauled by the legal system.

As gjn says I like my chances with the bear better.

Of course, you do have to be alive to find yourself in court.

No bear but did get a five pointer. It was cold, windy and damp.

Don't bears hibernate this time of year?

That seems to be the problem with the 6 day hunt during deer seasons. Most guys who had them on cameras have seen less activity after thanksgiving.

This story brings to mind all of the information from THE OUTDOOR LIFE BEAR BOOK. Having read it a couple of times, the bottom line is you are more likely to be killed by a Black Bear than by all other varieties combined.
