I bought a toaster oven off ebay for $10. The temp wasnt exactly right but with my lead thermometer (everyone has one right?) I got the temp right after only one batch of partially slumped bullets. About 1/4 of thm were obviously misshapen so they went straight into the save for later pail. I happen to have a sizeable stash of store bought hardcast in .452". These coated fine to shoot in my SAA copy that prefers .454" loads. I did resize those same tumbled PC bullets to use in another that prefers .452" loads. The resizing exposed some lead on some bullets and not evenly, but this caused no issue as accuracy was about the same with a known load for both. One thing I did mot do but will now is just try the unsized loads in the gun that likes .452" bullets. Who knows... it might shoot them fine and one less step in the prep-if it works. Jeff thank you for a great write up. Gave me some things to think about and try. And for those wondering, there is a fellah on castboolits.com that is selling all colors that are getting good reviews-including silver and clear for those (like me) that dont favor brightly colored bullets.

Thanks Jeff. Ordered up some red, yellow, black and white. Now I just have to locate my "man pants" -- could be kinda hard, as I'm the chief cook and bottle washer around here. Have all the casting stuff (molds, electric pots, Lee & Lyman sizers), etc., but it may be a while before I test this out as I have to clean out a spot in the garage before I can get to casting. Looking forward to trying some plain base as cast (unsized) to see how they work. Here's picture of Dick's lipstick 385gr .475" HPs and a target I shot while chrnoing some loads with my 2 1/2" RSRH Alaskan .480R. . . . . . Paul

If you have a thrift store nearby (Goodwill, Salvation Army, etc) check their appliance section. I've bought 2 toaster ovens from Goodwill for $1.50 each. Both worked & I have a dedicated bullet baker.

You guys are really doing some very creative work with this powder coating. My hat's off to you!

awp101, no lubing for smokeless powder. When I was looking at Youtube and other sites, I saw several people PC TC Maxi balls. I have never tried PC with BP, but as a charcoal burner myself, I see no difference between a plastic sabot, which I do use, and PC. You will need to run a wet patch, followed by dry after every 1-2 shots, depending on how hard it is to seat your chosen projectile. Another thought on BP cartridges and PC. What about a smear of lube AFTER coating for use in revolvers, BPCR, etc? Not running it through a luber per se, but just a smear in the lube grooves to keep fouling down?

awp, would seem to be the best of both worlds. No leading from the projectile and soft BP fouling.

I really appreciate your report Hoovet and those of you who have replied and commented on other threads on this topic. I'm very intrigued by the possibilities.
On a different note, while I too prefer my bullets to be silver/gray, one great fringe benefit I can see to color coded bullets is easy identification to match loads to guns. You may load the same bullet in .45 Colt for both a Ruger Flattop and a large framed Bisley @ 20k and 30K psi respectively. Having color-coded projectiles for each pressure level would be an additional margin of safety to prevent one from loading the wrong load in the wrong gun!
This technique could also be used for accuracy loads for guns operating at similar pressures (e.g. black for my S&W, blue for my Ruger Flattop)

I've been following this for some time over on castboolits and ordered some powder from a guy that's selling what appears from all the photos to be high quality. Got a new toaster oven at a yard sale, just waiting to pick up some plastic tubs and a set of rat tooth tweezers. I think they'd be the berries for picking the bullets up out of the tub. Little tiny teeth on the ends. I got some of the airsoft pellets to tumble the bullets with..apparently that helps with static cling. We'll see..now I'm excited!
