Nate and his one shot wildebeest, my consolation prize for not getting an eland; a big brute of an nyala, the prettiest of the spiral horns. My boy and I with Zephyr, a tracker from Zimbabwe, a good guy and excellent hunter. My boy was using my dads old pre-64 Model 70 with Douglas barrel in .284 Winchester. I used one round to drop the nyala. That size animal doesn't offer much resistance to a 300 gr Triple Shock. The only thing Nate missed was a wildebeest using my rifle, shot over the top. With his gun he layed everything down with one shot. First hunting trip. The load I worked up for his rifle was 55.5 grs of Win760 behind a 140 Barnes Triple Shock for just over 3000 fps. I know I could have driven it a little faster but a load that takes wildebeest with one shot is not really in need of improvement and of course accuracy was stellar. I only had 2 things on my list as I have been several times before, and since I didn't get any shot opportunities for either, I opted to take my 2nd nyala, this much bigger than my first from 2009. We measured one horn and it taped at 28 inches, easily placing in the top 100 SCI were I to enter, which I don't plan to do.

We'll be hunting near Hoedspruit. The weather in Atlanta caused our flight there to be canceled. So the adventure will begin tomorrow! You back yet Dave? Looking forward to your story.

Thanks James! Kudu is not a big boy but as my PH and I called it a "good starter kudu" for Nate. The things he wanted most were the oryx and wildebeest and he got those. Nyala wasn't even on my radar for this trip but when it began to look like the eland wasn't going to happen, I figured I ought to take something with my rifle.
