I see a silver lining! Everybody sell me your ivory and I'll move around the country selling it in whatever state i reside!

I have never seriously considered stocking any of my guns in ivory simply because of the costs involved, so I guess on a personal level I am not going crazy about this, in and of itself. However it really chaps my hide to see it being done by edict by our wonderful young man-child presidente and once again getting away with something, which in this case is a totally useless, meaningless, economy killing, touchy-feely, of no help symbolic gesture! What a pathetic loser!

I have had John Gallagher working on a gun based on the SS4 gun of JT's for about 3+ years. Granted, I have not been pushing John but it now looks like it will be too late to get the one piece ivories I had planned on. If the gun were done, it would be on its way but last I talked to John, it was not far enough along yet.

Rough sewn pieces are a fraction of the cost of a finished product. The "ban" calls for sales across lines, not shipment.

Otherwise I would have missed it also.

I wonder whether a complete independent Federal bureau will be created to control this rampant problem? Or possibly a division of the Interstate Trade Commission, with inspectors and agents in each state? OR add ivory to the list for the BATFE..."Open your safe, boy. Your neighbor said you was holding some contraband grips in here! Badges? We don't need no stinkin' badges!"

I remember in 1970 being in Botswana, wanted my Pro Hunter to take me to a Gov't," poached " Ivory sale. He said it would be way overpriced. Save your money it'll be cheaper later. Could have bought 200 ton for $2 per lb. Used the tip of a broken tusk from my Elephant, to make a set for my original flattop. And a set of handles for a custom carving set. Soaked in baby oil once a year, slight checking but a family heirloom... The handles for the carving set have an old English J carved in them. My how times have changed. I did not realize it at the time, but do now, I grew up in the GOOD TIMES, '30's thru 70's.... Amen

Why not make ivory illegal? What could possibly go wrong? It "worked" on drugs, didn't it?

Ironically, last week I bought a set of one piece older ivories for a Colt style single action grip frame. I may have to work it over to have the one piece ivories I want on the SS4 gun since it won't be done in time before the earth saving ban starts.

Your neighbor said you was holding some contraband grips in here! Badges? We don't need no stinkin' badges!" Household possession isn't supposed to be a concern and either is inheritance or gifting as no monies will exchange. USF&W hasn't delcared exactly what will be required but it may just be an affidavit from the owner. If that's the case a little homework may be in order to get the history of the piece as axcurate as possible. I won't remove my ivory before hitting the range but plan on placing a copy of any documentation I have in my kit... Remember, the govt is you and me and not "them"... They may not be at the range when you are but they might. They'll certainly be at the guns and knife shows and always have been. The burden of proof falls on the owner with this new legislation.. USF&W knows gun and (predomiately) knife communities deal in ivories frequnty. There's horror stories of custom knife makers dealing with customs and USF&W getting it wrong before this development and that's what I fear the most. It's a given they'll be unable to tell the difference between the different ivories, ancient ivories, acrylic varieties, etc... I wouldn't put it past a fed to closely eye an ivory paper micarta FA and question it.

Did anyone read the Forbes Article? Not just a ban on interstate sale sale, but on possession... Every time the Nat Geo types sponsor an ivory burn the price goes up and the private reserves become more valuable... The pouched Ivory grips comment was thoughtless ...Just in Alaskan ivory... tons laying around...
So many issues with this... Hide those piano keys...

Time to write your US Representative and Senators. I can't see how this can be done constitutionally by the Executive Branch alone, especially with the regulation of INTRASTATE possession and transfers of possession. Regardless of whether this will affect you or not, this is a serious power grab by the Executive Branch. If they don't get Congressional push-back on this, you can expect more of the same in every aspect of life.

I already expect more of the same in every aspect of life. That aside, you're right about contacting your Reps. and Senators, Steve.
