Ruger bisley hunter/bushnell elite 2-6 with hornady 210 xtp and h110. Shot was 147 paces in the snow. Guessing somewhere around 110-120 yds. (Short legs) Pic shows shot . Buck ran out of sight and didn't show signs of being hit. Good snow last night so the tracking was easy but no blood whatsoever. He ran about 100 yds and I see him standing then walking off. I give him a little time and then proceed to follow the trail. Finally get to where I last saw him and he had laid down twice but only two quarter sized spots of blood were found. I move again and bump him once more. Decide to give him more time and change the bisley for a 6.5 jdj contender. Follow him for a guesstimated 1/2 mile and only saw 10-15 eraser spots of blood along the way. Bumped him a third time and laid down by a log and made a long shot with the jdj. Hit him square in the back in the pelvis. He dropped but slid down a steep hollow hitting several trees really hard and fell off about a 12 foot cliff at the bottom. He was missing a lot of hair and 3 points were broken off. I gutted him and no organs damaged. I wanted to know where the failure was so I skinned him after I got him home. Never found the bullet and there was no exit. Bullet went throughout the fan bone of the shoulder, hit a rib and then I got lost. Don't know if it was a bone or bullet that did the damage on the other side. Deer was hit hard, but something didn't go righ

Without snow, I never would have found this buck even though he was hit pretty hard.

Maybe lighting a bigger fire behind that XTP would help... Looks to me like a wonderful justification for a larger case 41 cal cartridge.

22 gr of 296 is a pretty little fire. Went to the gut pile this morn but it was just a block of ice. I put my uncle on a really nice 8 pt about an hour ago. He shot it with t/c in 7mmJDJ. No pice yet because we left it I the woods. Gotta go back after I get my apron off. Wife is working today and I have to have dinner ready by 2:30....... I'm gonna make someone a damn fine wife some day.

Strange things can happen when hunting big game, whether its with a sixgun or a rifle, there's just some hits/reactions that can't be explained or duplicated, its hunting. I think you did everything right but thats just hunting. A couple of thoughts on the first deer might be bullet performance at 110-120 yds, maybe, just maybe the impact velocity might have been below the performance level for that bullet. Maybe the deer moved just as it was hit, redirecting the bullet a bit, this is fairly common & can cause some very strange results. I know of bullets hitting deer broadside or maybe in the neck & ending up going down a leg, etc. I know XTP's have a great reputation, seems to me everything Hornady makes is great quality but the distance might factor in here. I know I sound like a broken record here but jacketed slugs need velocity & "resistance" to work there magic, if the speed is down & the target is soft & tiny, etc. then it might not work as advertised. Jacketed slugs don't have as much nose surface (ogive for Texans) as cast & the nose is a tiny bit rounded, the nose on a cast slug, if made correctly is FLAT & bigger in diameter than an equal caliber jacketed slug, sometimes much bigger. The cast slug doesn't need high velocity to work, the nose makes it work. The lack of a blood trail happens & it would take someone much smarter than me (maybe Callshot) to explain why, I personally don't think there's a correct answer, I've had it happen & I've also had blood trails that Stevie Wonder could follow at a dead run. I sure wouldn't fault the XTP's, they are good bullets, I use the 125's in my carry gun with great confidence. If you continue to use them I'd either speed them up, get closer or PM me for some good cast slugs....Croc's not included!!

have you looked into the barnes xpb line of bullets? I don't know if they make them in .41, but they do make them in .44 and .45. you get the best of both worlds with them--awesome penetration (usually all the way through) and awesome expansion. haven't lost a deer yet with them.

Hey good job! With the issue you had with the xtp I am really scratching my head now. I can't get my 657 to group worth a darn with the cast and am almost ready to poke some of those full length gas checks into some cases. I was down to the wire and just threw a dot on my gp100. 3 shots to get on paper and it just started stacking them in there 357 mag. Gonna have to go this route as I am all but out of time. Your dad getting around well I hope? Jeff

Thanks for asking about dad. He's slowly improving. The main issue is getting the flap on his skin graft to fully close. If he would only take it easy for a few weeks, the flex point would finally fuse over and heal. This all started in June so what is a week or two in the scheme of things. Instead, he's in the barn loft moving the hay elevator, changing oil in the 4 wheelers, and about everything else to imped healing. He is worse than a kid at times and I can't whip him.

Look closely at sixshot's response. The voice of experience & knowledge. I have taken quite a few deer with a handgun, (mostly a T/C Contender,) and I can attest to the fact that things do not always go as planned. Lots of factors could have caused the issues you experienced. But, I understand your reasoning for switching to the T/C. No matter what, you did the right things, and you were able to recover this deer. Congrats on it, and to your Dad.
