I have been looking for some H110 or 296 for a long time and some LP Magnum primers. I am a owner operater trucker and I unloaded a couple blocks away from the Sportsmens Warehouse in Saint George, UT. so I walked down there to see what they had. All they had was 1 pound of A 300-MP and they were just then putting a box of 1000 Winchester LP primers for standard or magnum loads on the shelf, so I bought them. The powder was $20.00 and the primers were $38.00. Has anybody got any Heavy 45 Colt Ruger loads with 250 Gr. Horady JHP bullits. I have found loads for 44 Mag. and it seems to be just a little bit slower than H110/296. I am fairly new to this forum and this is my first Thread.I live in Pahrump, Nevada which is 65 miles over the hill west of Las Vegas. I really like this forum and I have gotten a lot of good information from it. Thanks for any help. Ron

Haven't yet tried it in .45 Colt and don't have any manuals that show Ruger loads with this powder but as you surmise it appears to be a little slower than H110, perhaps more like 5744. I would feel safe adding a couple grains over H110 by halves watching for signs. I have only used this powder in .480 Ruger with 325 and 400 gr bullets.

Wow! Was just looking at a Alliant Reloaders Guide thinking about this powder. Looking at the load data for magnum cartridges also leads me to believe it may be a little slower than H110 also. I would like to find some data for heavy 45 Colt loads also. May have to make my own data.

I recently read in I think Guns and Ammo that Alliant Mp- 300 is the same powder as H-110 and W-296. It's made in a plant in Florida.

Looking at the two powders side by side with a magnifying glass, the two appear to be the exact same powder. In appearance that is. That does not mean they are the same powder though, it sure looks like it.

The plant in FL is probably St. Marks. They make powder for everybody. But will not sell to you unless you have SAAMI industrial pressure equipment. Made spl powder lots for us at Super Vel. FWIW dept Believe its a WW subsidiary.

300Mp is indeded similar to 296/H110 but are not the same powders. I find 300 MP slightly slower and worked it best in longer barreles, its my go to powder for my 44 carbine. I have shot it in my 629 and found I had better velocities with 296 out of a 4" barrel.

Thanks Paden! If that info is accurate, that answers the question. Good news for me as I am about out of H110 but still have MP300!

Weird. Several months back, Brian Pearce at Handloader wrote a bit about this powder and he, too, said it was a bit slower than WW296/H110. He had some load data that seemed to indicate it was slower, too...

I believe that Alliant also suggests the use of standard non magnum primers with MP300 - maybe the use of the standard primer would account for it being slightly "slower" than 296/H110?

Despite the article above, many still seem to feel it is a tad slower than H110, not just here but on other forums as well. Was looking around for info tonight, one guy quoted Alliant as stating it was a little slower than H110. For safety sake one would expect them to say it was if anything, a tad faster to keep guys from pushing it. ...... ??
