Been holding a couple of Williams/Lyman sight sets for a few years. A gun club down in Birmingham shoots a couple 0f 100 yard off hand Lever Rifle Silhouette matches. One is rimfire match and the other a centerfire pistol cartridge match. Sounded like fun. Bought a sight set for the 39A and one for a 32-20 that lives here. Have not made it down there to shoot yet. The need to shoot iron sights on a qualification course for a NRA certification class drove me to get them mounted on the 39A. Might get the 32-20 done and go shoot this year..

I've got a '59 39A that I found on GB. Love the precision & feel of the action & very accurate; almost can't miss with 'er. Even shot a Ruger Rimfire Challenge match with it & actually turned in several strings faster than some of the 10/22 & AR22 guys. Very fun gun.

I have never known anyone who did not LOVE the Mountie once they were introduced to it. Naturally, since it was so highly regarded, Marlin dropped it, never to allow it to return.

Back in NY many wears ago I think early 90's there was a small gun show at a party house that always had good deals. I bought a 39A takedown made in 1952 for $250.00, pre-god trigger. I hunted with it many, many years. About 4 years ago or so my oldest son completed his hunters safety course and was at the range with me shooting it while I was shooting my 10mm. The firing pin broke after almost 60 years of use. I got one from GPC for an early 39a, it didn't fit, a lot of filing and sanding and still not right, I was given the name of a place that sold original Marlin parts(can't remember the name anymore), but the guy new his Marlins and explained that all 39a's are not the same internally, there where at least 4 different firing pins used. I described my gun and year, he agreed about the production year and sent me the firing pin, well it was much closer and after some filing & stoning, it works great with no hang ups. But I just went this week to change the front dovetail sight and it wouldn't come out! After brass punch to steel punch, then finally in my drill press trying to cut it out, should have just used a file but got impatient. I screwed it up!, now I need a new front sight base, checked ebay, GB, GPC, etc Can't find that low long 2 screw round front design to match, arghhhh! Picks to follow later. Here's mine:
The Rest will come later photo bucket sucks! they need a few 1000 more pop ups.

...my life started at age 14 when I was given a 39A Golden for Christmas that year. 90% of the ammo put through it was SEARS .22 Shorts...since it killed every rabbit and bottle he hammer dropped on what was the need for anything else... I sold that gun in 197 when I went to college... Have had about a half dozen more 39s over the last 10 years. Think the only profile I have not has is the D... Have found my favorite configuration is the CARBINE that was only made for a few years in the mid-1960s. The CARBINE was like the Mountie but had a 20" tapered barrel with dovetailed in front sight and a 3/4s magazine... Just find that model balances for me better than the others. Had three of them up till last year. Sold one last year and one last week. The last one is kinda interesting. Was in a Connecticut gun shop on consignment from an older gentleman who had died. Three years after his death his grandson found it in a closet when they were cleaning out the house probably for sale. No one in the family wanted it so they brought it to the shop to be sold.. Has the most outstanding stock I've ever seen on a levergun... The receiver was lightly scroll engraved and the owners initials also included. I tried to get the grandson's name from the shop but they were unwilling to give it to me, which is understandable... Have no clue if the gentleman who died was connected with Marlin but he had to have some connection as the wood looks like it was made by Marlin, not aftermarket... Sorry for the crappy pics... That is actually a whole tube of Long Rifles which I think is 12 rounds..there is 7 in the large hole... This is the one that went last year...it was 100% original except for the rear sight... 39s are definitely top tier .22s.... Bob
