I haven't stopped by lately, but I'm stuck at home due to a snowstorm and decided to cruise some of my old topics. Since I was here last, I've reacquired a Buckeye Special 32 combo to "back up" my stainless Blackhawk 8-shooter. A trip to Ohio to visit my old friend Dale53 and once again I have a good assortment of cast bullets to load both 32 H&R and 327 FM. I initially thought I would have the Buckeye punched out to 327 and limit myself to this one useful revolver, but where's the fun in that" So here I am once again searching out the best loads I can find for all the 32 revolver cartridges. C'mon Spring so I can get out and shoot some of these new loads! Froggie -------------------------------- Partner, I have been reading your posts over on Smith&WessonForum and am delighted to see you post here. I spend a lot of time here myself because of the members. You can't find a better group of folks who love to share their extensive experience. As I recall, you had a 616 made up for your use. I'm sure the guys here would love to see some pics and descriptions of that project. Welcome to the Circus, Prescut

Just this week a new .32 has entered the fray, the .30 Super Carry, a straight-walled rimless cartridge. (I know, but it shoots .312 bullets, the same as most '.32s.') It uses what really looks like a .32 French Long case, but is loaded hotter than that old cartridge. It's roughly in the 9mm power range fir fires 100-115gr bullets and shows good penetration and expansion in standard tests. It's going to be chambered in the S&W Shield and Shield EZ. The selling points are faster recovery between shots and more cartridges in the magazine compared to 9mm. I'm intrigued.

Hello Froggie...nice to see you here...
Well I tried some of the sized down to .311 Accurate 31-120S bullets with 12.0 grains of AAC-9...and it was a tad warm... Primers pretty flat and difficult ejection...more so on the 4.25" gun as it has tighter throats...
Velocity from the 6.5" barrel was 1700...in the high 1500s with the 4.25"...
Will be loading up some more in the next few days with 120 an 135 grain bullets...with a little less powder...
Also Fermin may be seeing the cylinder on the 4.25" to open it up .001 so it will run .412s...

This may be off topic for this thread but I'm going to resume loading for my Single Seven. It has set unused for several months and reloading for it has been nil. I keep meaning to get into the .327 but for a retired guy, my time seems to be limited.
The only die set I have is a Redding .32 H&R Mag set. Do I need to do anything special using these dies? I've always used the correct dies for the cartridge being loaded. Since the .327 case is longer, is there a problem setting the size die in the press?

Tinkerpearce,
Bud, what is the deal with that 30 Super Carry? Intriguing is the right word. I'm not sure why S&W would introduce a new cartridge like that. 9mm seems to OWN all the land around the main house. 9mm territory is well established with 100's of manufacturers. I would think that the new cartridge would have to be MUCH better to gain any ground.
I've always thought the Shield was a fine gun, but I'm really not into bottom feeders any longer. Being rimless I suppose means tough to shoot in a revolver; strike two.
Still, anything new, close to the .32's, will get my attention. I have a list of guns I wanted S&W to bring out or revive. This wasn't one I didn't know I wanted.
Prescut What an incredible thread!

for you 32 fanatics. If you’re on Facebook or Instagram check out master smith Bruce Bump’s page. He’s building a single shot black powder 32 that will gut you right after you’ve been shot. really cool seeing it built from scratch.

Have waded through this entire thread twice now. Being new to the .32 H&R, it's a treasure trove of information; thanks to you all. John

My 32 journey has turned a new page. First, I’m back in a Buckeye. I took it off my big brothers hands and you can see it here on page 9 of this epic thread. I dismounted his scope and converted it back to iron sight configuration. So for now, it’s a Buckeye converted to Bisley with Harton action work and a proven shooter. More, I have wanted to work with the 30 Carbine for some time. I built one up on a OM Flattop (I know I know) with a RW Gripframes aluminum Bisley Gripframe. For now it has a standard hammer as I am as anxious as anyone for Ronnie to get the new hammers out. Trust me when I tell you he is working his entire ass off every day of the week on this. Ronnie fitted an OM 30 Carbine cylinder to my Flattop welding up the gas ring and set the barrel back to minimum specs. I had to fit a ERH and since I plan on making this gun as light as I can tastefully get away with I used an aluminum unit. This gets better. My good friend BrentP, Brent1086, on this forum, sent me a NM 30 Carbine cylinder and lo and behold it lent itself to my already tightened up 30 Carbine Flattop. Alan Harton and I shortened the gas ring and faced off the cylinder and viola now I have the best of all worlds. This 30 Carbine Flattop will handle 30 Carbine and 32-20 brass 30 Carbine loads in the NM cylinder leaving me the other cylinder to make into a 30 Streaker. So for now my thoughts are thus: 1. Our 32 Sixgun Sledgehammer 135 grain HP bullet is a bit like a bullet in search of a platform. I plan to see how it runs in the 30 Carbine. What I know from interrogating DickT and RussC is that depending on your cylinders individual dimensions the Sledgehammer can run at least in the NM 30 Carbine cylinder. 2. My last 32-20 custom got away from me and after I built it I let my Buckeye 32-20 go. That won’t happen again. I still have a NM flattop that would make a wonderful 32-20. 3. There’s lots more to learn. My GP-100 327 is a shooter and has the length to manage the Sledgehammer 32 as well. 4. I haven’t done any work with the Mjolnir nor much with my 4 5/8’s Single 7 and I’m thinking there might be some magic there.
So here we go again….

For that bullet to work in the S7 you have to deep seat or run 32 mag brass. But you can still get way more performance that you might think in that case.

For that bullet to work in the S7 you have to deep seat or run 32 mag brass. But you can still get way more performance that you might think in that case. Checking my load table here’s where I ended up with the Sledgehammer in my testing: 327 Federal CCI 550 11.6 H110 MIHA 135 HPCG Sledgehammer seated to 1.5" OAL 4 5/8" S7 1219 5 1.2" FA 1354 7 1/2" S7 1330 Again, my thoughts are that the 1.5” cylinders are some short for the Sledgehammer and the Moljnir might be able to make 1350-1400 in my short barrel S7. In my 7 1/2” 327 I get 1488 with the 115 grain 314640 so naturally I will see what the Moljnir might in that platform. We have an awesome selection of 32 cast slugs to choose from.

Update to my last post; I now have a S&W Model 631 “little brother” for my custom Project 616. The former a 4” J frame with adjustable sight, chambered in 32 H&R ( I refuse to call it a “Magnum”) and the latter a stainless K frame with a heavy 4” under lug barrel, built on a Model 66 donor. Both of my Rugers are on full size New Model Blackhawk frames, the Buckeye Special 32 H&R/32-20 combo and the stainless 327 Eight Shooter. I think it’s time to quit buying and start shooting! ☺️
Before you join the chorus of those saying that three out of the four guns listed above are “too big” to be 32s, keep in mind the the two in 327 FM are designed from the ground up to be true Magnums in every sense of the word. While I can take either of them out with mild loads like cat sneeze 32 S&W L reloads, their real forte is to be ground stompin’ fire breathers and I want to have plenty to hold onto. A NOE 125 grain bullet over a healthy charge of AA #7 or #9 and I’m ready to face anything I canshoot here in VA with a handgun. Anything more rates a shotgun or crew served weapon! 😁
The cute little 631 is tapped to be my “kit gun” and the 32 H&R “almost magnum” is fine for casual woodswalking and plinking at targets of opportunity including small game in season and pesky varmints any other time. I almost hate to say it, but I’m beginning to think my quest for 32 revolvers has come to its natural end. As I said before, it’s time to quit buying and start shooting a lot. I’ve gotta try to make a dent in my big stash of small pistol primers and .313” bullets of various weights and descriptions. Ain’t retirement grand? 😆

Hey Froggie,
Really nice write up on those pistolas and the ammo each can digest without saying ouch.
I also just acquired the S&W 631 and it is a handfull for me with hot 32 H&R. I figured to back off a touch to the "that's nice" category. I use the Ruger BH8 for stiff 327fm and it seems to handle recoil perfectly with the extra weight. I got a beautiful custom mount from our own Dick Thompson (sixshot) and now have a scope on it. Joy, oh joy. I can see the target again.
The right tool for the right job. Seems to be a truism.
Prescut Can you tell us what you did with a S&W model 66 357mag to get a .32 ? I too love those K frames; perfect size for me.
