Gentlemen- If I may ask a question out of ignorance: Why does a guy want a .45 ACP cylinder if they have a .45 Colt?

Gentlemen- If I may ask a question out of ignorance: Why does a guy want a .45 ACP cylinder if they have a .45 Colt? The .45 ACP is one of the most popular cartridges of all time. Ammo, and componets are readily available. For folks that don't reload, .45 ACP is much more likely to be encountered at local gun shops and major retailers and at cheaper prices than .45 Colt ammo (at leat it use to be). Local gun shows used to have the MiWal (remanufactured) ammo avail in Ammo Cans of 500 for a very reasonable price -- I shot a lot this ammo in the Fa97 with the .45 ACP cyl. For those that do reload, most have 1911s (and S&W Revolvers) in 45 Acp and usually turn 45 ACP ammo out in copius quantities on progressive loaders. It gives you another option that allows you to keep shooting if for some reason the .45 Colt isn't available. Paul

THAT'S MINE ALSO. IF THE NF WAS A2ND GEN, NO CONTEST AS THEY ARE HARD TO COME BY. 3RD GEN? I'D TAKE THE FA.

Plus you can use auto mags as SA wheelgun speedloaders. Ain't "period correct" but it's damned functional .

Some folks have Dillon Precision presses, e.g., the 1050, set up for the 45 ACP so always have 45 ACP ammo shoot.
Not necessarily so with the 45 Colt.

Get paid, and credited for your excellent writing... I WAS PAID WELL BY "GUNS" BUT UNFORTUNATELY THERE IS NO PAY INVOLVED WHEN SOMEONE POSTS ANYTHING ON THE NET INCLUDING ARTICLES TAKEN FROM MAGAZINES.

This is NOT an apples-to-apples comparison. Alongside the FA, just about any sixgun would come up lacking, including most high-dollar custom jobs. My 3-1/2" fixed-sight M97 .45 Colt is truly a PPP, and balances better than any centerfire revolver I own.
But I LOVE my New Frontiers!
There is only one answer to this - both are more than worthy of shooting time and vault space.

I too have kept a Dillon 550 (and a 650) setup for 45 Colt, but they just don't pump 'em out as fast as the 1050.
On the 550, when I'm not looking, someone will sneak in and change it to reduced SASS cowboy loads instead of full house six-shot cylinder loads.

I have seen 3rd gen. Colts that were very nice. You do have to look them over though. Frank

I'm with Boge on this one. Like em both but dont see it as one or the other. Too different for me to make a choice.

Shooting time indicates accuracy is an issue. You already load 45, and, the FA is going to be more accurate. Only accurate guns are really interesting... Spoken as if it is a universally accepted given that the New Frontier won't be accurate enough to do 99% of what you might need a packable sixgun to do. A 100% bogus statement.

I never refuted the claim that the FA will in all likelihood be more accurate. My statement is against your assumption that the New Frontier won't be "interesting" because it's not 'as' accurate. When in all probability, it will be plenty accurate "enough". Besides, raw, gilt-edged accuracy isn't the only important factor.

I do load for the 44 Special.
Keep both a Dillon 550 and a 650 setup for the 44 Special. One is set for 6.5 grains of Unique and the other 7.5 grains of Unique -- both with Keith's.
But don't have a Dillon 1050 setup for the Special which does hamper production rate relatively speaking.

.
One disadvantage is 5 shots for the FA vs. 6 for the Colt.
Hey Max, that to me is why I see them so differently. One is a premier hunting revolver the other a beautiful classic. Say if would have been a comparison between a Precision Center BFR and a FA. Or New Frontier vs a USFA flat top.
