I used to like H4227 but realize since Hodgdon acquired IMR the H version is no longer avaiable. What's the difference between the two? Do I need to change my old H4227 loads when using IMR and what's the rule of thumb? Thanks.

All the books show I faster than H. The powder looks different too.
Many people will tell you they are the same. There are also variations of each made in the USA and Australia. Work up to your old loads using a chronograph.
I have started using H110 and AA 1680 where I used to use H4227 and don't miss it, but I also never liked it for reduced loads.

THE CURRENT #4227 IS EITHER H IN AN IMR CAN OR VICE VERSA; CAN'T REMEMBER WHICH. IT IS THE SAME STUFF.

Current IMR 4227 is actually H4227 with an IMR label. H4227 is actually ADI 2205 and made in Australia. Original IMR 4227 was made in Canada. IMR 4227 was slightly faster than H4227, but definitely more popular so Hodgdon's did a little slight of hand when they acquired the IMR name.

Say what you want, but my can of H4227 had greenish yellow powder in it, and my "made in australia" IMR 4227 is black and not an "extreme" powder.

"H" "IMR" After reading about X4227 here and other places for years I recently picked up 8 pounds of IMR4227 for those 44/45/475/50 loads that are more than Trail Boss loads but not H110 level stuff..

Give Hodgdon's a call, they will let you know just what is what. This isn't meant to question John's post, but to confirm some powders are the same! I called them about a year ago when I reread an old article in the Oct/Nov 09 Handloader that told of several Hodgdon's & WW powders being the same.
I spoke with a ballistican & he was very polite & answered my questions verifying the article in Handloader. Frank
