Gents I am planning to buy a Model 97 in 45 colt but have heard that unless you drive bullets at 1000+ fps accuracy drops off. Any truth?
If anyone has a used one to sale let me know too! Thanks and would not mind seeing pics of your 97s!

Thanks and would not mind seeing pics of your 97s! I have not heard that one! Mine is a 44 Special and accuracy was TERRIBLE with lighter loads (1000 fps with Power Pistol) and VERY hard lead bullets. A softer bullet solved that problem and it is a tack driver now. Dan

Ditto on the trigger job option. Kinda pisses me to pay a premium for a good trigger on a "Premium" model $1900 revolver. But it is soon forgotten. Forgive the re-play of the pictures. I hope they do not bore. The gun can do this at 100 yds. With a good shooter and rest. Needs more scope for sure but the 2X is great for offhand shots to 100 yds. or so. I need the optical clarity and lack of shake magnification. However I think this particular group was at about 35 yds. Sighting in that modified M83 Leupold base. They don’t make one for a M97 so I made it fit. I have actually shot several 1.5” 100 yd. groups but I’m not very good, just lucky sometimes. It will flat shoot however. Even a 1.5” group looks large with only .22 holes! Lol. I’d love one in .41 magnum, figure that would about be “it” for a med. game long range revolver. A fun night shot with 10 grs. Of H110 and a 40 gr. Notice no gas flame leaking from the cylinder gap! The brilliant transfer bar system. I think it is about one of the coolest things I’ve seen. So far all I’ve taken with it is this Muntjac, Asain “fanged” Barking deer. What else would one shoot with it? A Hornady 40 gr. V-max at 2100 fps worked fine with the iron sights.

Mine shoots well with everything I have run through it.

No accuracy issues with my .45 Colt. I'll ditto the "trigger job" option.

Here's a photo of my .45 Colt / .45 ACP Mdl.97. It handles .45 Colt loads with a 250 from 1050 - 1150 fps with great accuracy, and .45 ACP with loads using 200's and 230's from 750 - 850 fps equally well. I never tried .45 Colts that slow, but if it handles the ACP.... For whatever it's worth, none of my 3 97's needed a trigger job. All were delivered with excellent triggers. Since you want to see photos of 97's here's a scoped 7 1/2" .22LR and an iron sighted .32 H&R. I guess you can squint and imagine that the barrel says ".45 Colt"

I use 9 grains of unique and a cast 255 swc in mine. Shoots as good as I can hold it. Wish mine had the octagan barrel. Watch the movie, Quick and the Dead, last night, and they some octagan barrel guns.

Does it use the same super slow twist barrel as the model 83 454? Accuracy aside it does seem strange to me they would do that.
edit: went and looked it up... same twist for model 83/97:
357=1-14" 41=1-14" 44=1-20" 45=1-24" 475=1-18"
Knowing the 454 is set up for light-med bullets fired at a pretty good power level it still seems strange to barrel a mod 97 with the same blank. I have a 454 and have no accuracy complaints but anything I shoot that is 45 cal & subsonic is from another gun.

I guess it probably comes down to what an individual considers accurate. An inch and a half at 100 yards with a Model 97 on a consistent basis would be something to see. If I had such a revolver I probably couldn’t shoot that size group. I’ve got a Baer 1911 that I can do right at 3” rested at 50 yards but I need a bushel basket at 100 yards. That Baer has a 1.5” guarantee @ 50 yards but I can’t hold that well. I’m happy with an “on-demand” 2 inch group at 25 yards and to be able to keep all 5 in or around a 4” bull at 50 yards. I haven’t found a load under 1,000fps that will shoot worth a darn in my M97 and when I called FA about the poor accuracy at low velocity they advised their “test” load was a 240 grain speer bullet ahead of 26 grains of H110 and a CCI350 primer – that puppy is moving out close to warp speed. I think you have to push light bullets hard to get small groups. Here’s the best I’ve found and I can only shoot this group with optics off a bench at 25 yards – using open sights benched will get me at least one flier – sometimes I’ll get 5 fliers in a 5-shot group.

I can't comment on the .45 Colt FA 97 as all I've got is a piddlin' .44 Special. It has shot everything I've had to shoot through it pretty well considering the nut behind the trigger. Being an insensitive slob re: triggers, I think mine is fine.

You would think the 97, 45 colt would need a faster twist.

Hobie I remember when you bought yours, what kind of loads are you using in it? I just bought one from a board member and haven't had a chance to get it out yet, COLD, SNOW. I like to go about 850 fps as a fun load, but for the sake of accuracy I would go hotter. Also HUNTERSHOOTER, who did your leather, I like it very much.
